Plasma Eyelid Lifting FAQs
What is the treatment?
Plasma Pen advanced skin tightening is a non-surgical lift procedure which can give the same results as traditional surgery. It is safe, virtually painless and is performed without cuts or anaesthesia, however, an anaesthetic cream is applied locally prior to treatment. This innovative technique will not cause over-lifting. Only the excess skin is affected during the procedure. Clients are able to notice results right away although it takes several weeks for full effects to be visible. The procedure may only be performed by a certified specialist.
How long will the effects of the treatment last?
The treatment should last long-term rather then few months although it is hard to predict exactly. Ageing is a dynamic process and there are many factors affecting clients individually; lifestyle, diet and genetics just to mention few. At this moment in time, permanent results are not available. After any anti-ageing procedure or traditional surgery your skin will continue to relax (loosen) again. In some rare situations ageing may be accelerated and effectiveness of the treatment would be shortened. Your specialist will discuss those conditions so you will have a better understanding of what to expect.
How long does it take to perform the eyelid lift treatment?
The treatment takes between 5-15 minutes depending on the size of the area. Including preparation and cooling, you should plan for approximately 1 hour.
How does it work?
The plasma produced by the Plasma Pen consists of ionized gas, namely the ambient air, consisting mainly of approximately 78% nitrogen and 20% oxygen. This produces a micro-flash. The required energy is minimal, but the generated plasma transmits the energy very precisely to the skin and protects the surrounding tissues. The precision of the Plasma Pen is outstanding and produces excellent results. Clients can resume regular activities right away with minimal discomfort.
How does the Plasma Pen affect the skin?
The plasma produced by the Plasma Pen has 2 different mechanisms of action:
Extrinsic (external): The procedure precisely sublimates the upper layers of the skin (the epidermis). The underlying tissue (dermis) is spared, allowing accelerated healing.
Intrinsic (internal): The plasma produced contains ionized particles that reach deeper layers of skin causing a slight anaesthesia, accelerating the healing (plasma disinfects) and inducing scar-free healing.
How does plasma accelerate wound healing?
The intrinsic plasma effect is mainly generated by the nitrogen reactive species and the oxygen reactive species that reach deeper skin layers. Plasma causes an acceleration of mitosis and fibroblast migration, as well as a promotion of new vascularisation. Mitosis and migration of keratinocytes are also encouraged.
Why is wound healing scar-free after a plasma treatment?
The Plasma Pen treatment does not injure the dermis. The plasma generated only stimulates the dermis through the nitrogen and oxygen reactive species.
Why is a plasma treatment virtually pain-free?
Due to the precision of the epidermis sublimation, the underlying tissue is not damaged. Plasma even has a slight numbing effect. Both factors allow treatment without injectable anaesthesia.
Is there a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) from the treatment?
The Plasma Pen treatment does not induce pigmentation. It is important, however, to protect the treated skin from UV (solar) radiation for up to 4 months.
Is after-care important?
In a word, “YES!” For undisturbed wound healing, appropriate care instructions should be followed. Sports, swimming and sauna are not permitted until the scabs fall off.
What side effects can be expected after an eyelid lift using the Plasma Pen?
Immediately after the treatment is performed, the skin feels sunburnt and there is local swelling.
The following day, the soreness should be gone, however, the swelling is stronger. The swelling depends on the treatment intensity, treatment area and the tendency of the client to swell. The swelling usually disappears by 72 hours after the treatment.
1-2 days after treatment, crusts (scabs) are created that mustn’t be picked off. These fall off naturally after 4-7 days. The skin is then pink for approximately 1-2 weeks.
Is a consultation required?
Yes. A complimentary, face-to-face consultation is required by all. Careful assessment by a plasma therapy specialist will ensure a suitable and realistic treatment plan.
What are the advantages of a plasma therapy eyelid lift/skin toning?
· No syringes are required and therefore no bruises are expected
· No general anaesthetic required
· No cuts necessary
· Immediate visible tightening
· Relatively short downtime
· No scars
· No asymmetries
· No change of eye (facial expression) for eyelid lift
· No risk of over-correction
What are the advantages of plasma therapy compared to laser treatment?
· In a laser treatment, eg fractional laser, the dermis is damaged with the laser to trigger the healing process. In contrast, a plasma treatment does not damage the dermis, but stimulates it. The high-energy plasma particles penetrate the skin layers and trigger a tightening effect and accelerated healing.
· Plasma therapy is less painful than laser treatment.
What possible side effects can be expected?
Serious side effects are extremely unlikely with a thorough consultation. Minor side effects include swelling for up to 3 days and tiny scabs for up to 7 days. After treatment and up to approximately 4 months thereafter, UV protection with SPF 50 must be applied in order to avoid pigment disturbances.
How many sessions are necessary?
The number of sessions depends on the type of findings, the skin region to be treated, the intensity of treatment and the healing capacity of the skin.
Depending on the desired result, 1-4 sessions may be necessary with a break of 12 weeks between treatments.
Is the planoplas® Plasma Pen a tested device?
Yes, the planoplas® Plasma Pen is CE certified and completely made in Germany, therefore, it meets high health, safety and environmental protection requirements. Similarly, the planoplas® Plasma Pen is EU-compliant due to the close cooperation with the DEGEUK-German Society for EU Conformity (www.degeuk.de).
Should I watch for any unusual complications?
Plasma therapy is very safe but in some rare occasions complications may occur. Please inform your specialist immediately in case of any unusual symptoms. This may include signs of infection such as excessive redness, pus, blistering or thick, yellow crust forming in treatment area.
Is it necessary to wear a special eye protection during treatment?
Special eye protection is not necessary. Plasma is harmless for the eyes of the client or the practitioner. Sunglasses are a very good idea to wear after the treatment and whenever outdoors for the following 4 months.
How should I prepare for the procedure?
Please do not apply any cosmetics or fake tan before the procedure. You should tell your therapist about any recent medical conditions and medications taken. Please disclose all previous surgeries or aesthetic procedures performed on your skin.
